PRELIMINARY ANNOUNCEMENT AND CALL FOR PAPERS
The 9th European Roe Deer Congress will be held in Edinburgh, Scotland in early July 2009. The scientific part of the meeting will comprise 2 full days of lectures and workshops (with an additional morning available if required). It is proposed that the meeting should largely follow the same format as earlier meetings with a series of spoken and poster sessions but with more time set aside for informal, workshop-style discussions.
Edinburgh offers many tourist attractions and a social programme will be arranged around the conference. Scotland in summer is also a very attractive place should delegates wish to extend their visit or even bring their families for a holiday.
The purpose of this early circulation is to:
• Invite preliminary registration/expressions of interest to assist planning [see preliminary registration form attached);
• Encourage widespread publicity among the scientific community;
• Seek contributions (oral / poster presentations) to the scientific programme and workshop sessions.
Draft Outline Programme.
Monday 6 July A field visit to the Borders region / Return to Edinburgh for night
Registration desk open during evening
Tuesday 7 July Scientific meeting starts at Dynamic Earth, Edinburgh
Wednesday 8 July Scientific meeting continues / Workshops during pm
Thursday 9 July Workshops end by 1300
Field trip leaves for north - stay night somewhere;
Friday 10 July Field Trip continues returning to Edinburgh for night.
Spoken and Poster Sessions
The conference language will be English. Themes proposed for oral and poster sessions are:
• Physiology (including nutrition);
• Behaviour;
• Population ecology (including predation, mortality factors);
• Habitat use and foraging ecology;
• Evolution and genetics; biogeography;
• Impacts (vegetation, deer-vehicle collisions, roe as vectors of disease);
• Monitoring of populations and impacts;
• Management and applied studies.
The themes which are finally selected will be determined by the number and content of papers offered. All those wishing to present papers (on these or other topics) in either the oral or poster sessions are asked to submit the details to the scientific organising committee as soon as possible so a final programme can be drawn up.
Offers of papers should contain:
- Author’s name(s),
- Affiliation (institution if any)
- Full contact details (postal and email address)
- Title of proposed talk or poster
- Abstract – which should not exceed 450 words
An indication should also be offered as to whether the contribution is being proposed as an oral or poster presentation, although the Scientific Committee reserves the right to make a final decision on this in the light of the number of papers received and space available.
Offers of papers can be submitted at any time, but those wishing to have papers accepted MUST have sent details (and Abstracts, as above), no later than 15th March 2009
Workshops
In order to ensure that the meeting retains as much informality of structure as possible and offers plenty of opportunity for exchange of ideas and views, it is proposed that the more ‘formal’ sessions will be accompanied by much more informal workshop periods. We will anticipate holding a total of up to 6 workshops with possible themes drawn from the following suggestions:
• Genetic variation and biogeography of roe deer
• Bodyweight variation in roe deer (in relation to latitude/landscape/etc and climate change)
• Variation in roe deer space use along environmental gradients
• Responses of roe deer to habitat change
• Expansion of the use of roe deer as bio-indicators of habitat quality and environmental
Pollution;
• Managing roe deer populations for multiple goals – large carnivore predation and hunting.
• Habitat management for manipulation of populations or control of damage
• Dispersal behaviour
Once again, the themes finally decided upon will depend in part on interest and uptake by participants who are welcomed to suggest additional/alternative topics/themes with your preliminary registration.
The Scientific Committee has suggested that in order to provide focus within these workshop sessions, it be appropriate to punctuate these with short spoken presentations along the way. Thus, the workshop theme will be established with a brief introductory talk by the workshop leader... and discussions will then punctuated by short talks through the workshop, each designed to take the workshop to a slightly different focus/direction?
Please therefore indicate on your registration form if you would wish to contribute one of these ‘short reports’ within a particular workshop session. Offers will be passed on to workshop leaders, who will then contact you directly to discuss details of your contribution to that session.
Action required
This circulation is intended as preliminary notification only so that intending delegates can put dates and details in your diary, register an interest and ensure that you receive future circulations as the congress programme and plans develop. Please also circulate these details as widely as possible among your colleagues and any others who might be interested in attending.
Please complete and return the form attached indicating your interest in receiving further information in due course. It would also help (even at this early stage) if you could indicate whether or not you anticipate offering an oral or poster paper and if so, within which of the proposed themes. Finally, we would be glad to know which of the workshop topics you think you might be most interested to attend or to hear suggestions for other workshop topics you would like to see happen.
Key Dates
December 2008 - Additional information about the congress will be circulated and a website set up
15th March 2009 - Final deadline for submission of Abstracts for Oral/Poster sessions.
1 June 2009 - Final deadline for conference registration.
